Maldives had been one of the safest tourism destinations even amidst the coronavirus pandemic, mainly due to the country's geographical advantage of secluded islands.

Now as the world slowly opens up for aviation and tourism once again, Maldives is declared a safe destination by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).

Ministry of Tourism said yesterday, that the WTTC has awarded the "Safe Travels" stamp to the Maldives, recognising the country's efforts in implementing enhanced health and safety measures in line with the WTTC global Safe Travels protocol. The Ministry said the stamp also recognises creation of a safe and gradual plan by rebuilding confidence among travellers.

The WTTC Safe Travels stamp is endorsed by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) and more than 200 travel companies.

"The objective of the Safe Travels stamp is to provide confidence to travellers and re-establish consumer confidence in Travel & Tourism, and ensure travellers of enhanced standards of hygiene are in plane and the assurance that they can once again experience 'Safe Travels', said the Ministry of Tourism.

This is reportedly the world's first ever global safety and hygiene stamp for Travel & Tourism, designed to address COVID-19 and similar other outbreaks.

Currently 34 countries and different regions of ten countries over five continents received WTTC's Safe Travels stamp, including five countries from the Asia-Pacific region--Guam, Indonesia, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Maldives.
