The Marine Centre at Baros Maldives will be providing the opportunity for guests at the resort to adopt their very own coral, something never before seen in the Maldives.
The resort will provide an underwater frame with transplanted coral chosen by guests that will grow forever and contribute to the longevity and beauty of resort's breathtaking reef.
These fragments of broken coral occur due to damage to the reef. These otherwise redundant but living fragments are then transplanted into new habitats for fish, coral as well as other invertebrates. The biologists at the resort then create and dedicate an underwater frame for guests of the resort and will even attach a customized name tag to transplant corals.
For two years following the creation and planting of your frame, the Marine Centre Team will send updates on the growth of the coral frame by email every six months so that guests can observe the growth of the corals adopted by them.
Baros's Coral Regeneration Project Initiative began in 2009 and since then have submerged a total of 365 coral tables. Complete and mature frames are brought to the nursery in The Lighthouse lagoon, where the Marine Centre team routinely maintains them. This involves cleaning the frames of algae and benthic dwellers such as tunicates that inhibit coral growth.
