The Travco Group, led by Egypt's El Chiaty family, is one of the region's top leisure groups, having a portfolio of integrated businesses in the tourism, hospitality, and aviation sectors. The unique facility is the only resort owned by the family in the Maldives. Hamed El Chiaty, the Chairman and CEO of Travco Group, and his son Karim El Chiaty, Vice-Chairman of Travco Group, collaborated closely to conceptualize the resort as a peerless distillation of what their family had pioneered and admired in the luxury hospitality over the course of a lifetime in the travel industry.

The Dutch company OT Design BV came up with the idea for Vakkaru Maldives, which features 113 roomy, palm-thatched villas and homes scattered across the lagoon or tucked away amid the island's coconut plantation. The design language for the resort was significantly influenced by Dora El Chiaty, the managing director and head of interior design of Travco Group.
