The ultra-low-cost carrier Wizz Air Abu Dhabi has launched scheduled flights to Maldives.

According to Wizz, it will operate flights on the Male’-Abu Dhabi route four times a week; on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. It also has plans of increasing flights to six times a week in November, and to daily flights in December.

The airline’s first flight to Maldives landed at the Velana International Airport (VIA) at 04:50 pm Tuesday, to a warm reception.

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi’s Managing Director Michael Berlouis noted Maldives’ ever-growing popularity as a tourist destination.

“Offering the ideal escape for relaxation, self-discovery and picture-perfect moments, it’s no surprise that the Maldives is an ever-popular destination. In line with our commitment to offer our customers world class low-cost travel experiences, we are excited to now be flying to this tropical paradise, unlocking new travel options for those not only within the UAE, but also for self-connecting passengers,” he said.

Wizz Air's first flight to Maldives lands at the Velana International Airport (VIA) on October 4, 2022.

Berlouis said the new route will be operated by Airbus A321neo, which was recently added to its brand-new fleet, and offers the lowest fuel burn, emissions and noise footprint.

Maldivian Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom said that with the extensive global connections the UAE provides, the new route will strengthen connectivity between Maldives and the rest of the world.

“And with this enhanced connectivity between UAE and Maldives, I welcome Emiratis and resident to travel to Maldives and experience the Maldivian hospitality. Thanks to the direct flights between Abu Dhabi and Maldives, more people can take advantages of this convenient link. I wish Wizz Air every success with its new service to Maldives,” he said.

The new route offers travelers the opportunity to explore the world-renowned tourist destination, and falls in line with Wizz Air’s ambitions to provide hassle-free and affordable travel experiences.
