As Maldives marks the 50th anniversary of the nation’s tourism sector – servicers who had contributed to the sector over the years were honored during a special ‘Tourism Appreciation Reception’ held at Crossroads Maldives on Thursday night.
The large-scale event bringing together tourism sector servicers – old and new – from across the nation, also saw the attendance of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Vice President Faisal Naseem, Tourism Minister Abdulla Mausoom and other state dignitaries. Pioneers of Maldivian tourism also graced the event excluding George Corbin.
During the ceremony, appreciation plaques were presented to both local and foreign prominent individuals, companies, and organizations that have contributed to the Maldivian tourism sector over the past 50 years – including the pioneers of Maldivian tourism.
Speaking during the ceremony, President Solih emphasized on maintaining Maldives’ position in the competitive international tourism markets as a two-time World’s Leading Destination winner. He suggested the goal may be achieved through continuation of providing exceptional hospitality to visitors, maintaining the quality of the service, and preserving the natural beauty of the Maldivian islands.
Reflecting how the tourism industry flourished in the Maldives – the President thanked the pioneers for their hard work and dedication, also commending everyone involved in the Maldives' tourism industry and expressing gratitude for their efforts.
Pioneers of the Maldivian tourism industry also delivered short remarks during the ceremony. In this regard, Champa Hussain Afeef said that efforts to maintain the ‘World’s Leading Destination’ title should be doubled in comparison to efforts put to secure the title. He called on industry stakeholders to remain committed to this work.
Mohamed Umar Manik said that the current administration recognized and honored the hard work of tourism sector workers more than any other administration.
“Tonight, we have learned that this is an industry we should be proud of. That the government has recognized this as well,” he added.
Ahmed Naseem, who also serves as the current Health Minister, thanked all administrations for allowing persuasion of the tourism sector without much interference.
‘Tourism Appreciation Reception’ is just one of the events being held in celebration of the 50th anniversary of tourism in the Maldives. Apart from being an event to honor tourism sector servicers, it also served as a setting where tourism sector servicers could network.
