SilkAir, a premium, short-to-medium haul regional carrier operating under Singapore Airlines is set to return to Maldives.

The airline will be commencing flights to the high-end travel destination from December 1 onwards.

Flights will operate to Maldives twice a week and the airline will be utilizing a Boeing 737-800 for the operations.

Maldives reopened its borders on July 15, after COVID-19 took hold of the tourism industry and halted travel in March. The country has been dubbed as a safe haven during the pandemic due to the dispersity of the geography as well as immense safety measures in place.

Before the lockdown, Singapore Airlines and SilkAir operated a total of 16 flights to Maldives.

Maldives' main gateway, Velana International Airport has been witnessing a steady increase in passengers and return of international flight operators since the reopening of borders. Some key names include Qatar Airways, Emirates, Aeroflot, Edelweiss, Turkish Airways, SriLankan Airlines, Etihad Airways and Air India.

Dubai-based budget airline flydubai is to resume operations to Maldives after two years this October, and British flag carrier British Airways' seasonal winter service to Maldives will take place this year too.
