Russian leisure airline Nordwind is set to start operations to Maldives on 28th October. This is the first time the airline will be flying to the Maldives.

Nordwind Airlines was established in 2008 with just three aircrafts. Thirteen years later, Nordwind has 33 aircrafts in its fleet, and is ranked among the top ten Russian airlines in terms of passenger turnover.

According to official sources, Nordwind Airlines will be fly twice a week between Moscow and Malé. The airline will operate its Malé services out of Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Meanwhile, Aeroflot has decided to double its flight frequency to Maldives. The Russian flag-carrier restarted Maldives operations 11th September 2020 with two flights per week.

Maldives is a World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) certified Safe Travels destination, and travelers are required to present a COVID-19 negative test result of no more than 96 hours prior to entry into Maldives.

A recent study by the International Air Transportation Association (IATA) revealed that the risk of COVID-19 transmission on board aircrafts is low, due to the safety measures in place and aircraft design and cabin layout. IATA said more than 1.2 billion people traveled on aircrafts in between January and June 2020, yet only 44 cases of air travel-related COVID-19 transmission were reported.
